What has never changed in you

Illumination · Branch III · The one who observes

“There is always a part of our Being that never changes and that remains immutable.”From Deshojando el Corazón de la Eternidad

Do you really believe your consciousness has been altered from your childhood until this moment?

Connect with your childhood memories, with that feeling of life from when you were barely ten years old. Has that feeling really changed with the age you are now?

When you close your eyes and all those memories come to you, you feel that you have lived a past. And it is true that many things changed. Your body grows older as time goes by, and so does your mind, though much more slowly. But the one who looked at the world through your senses when you were a child, is it not the same one who looks at it today?

Let me show you with something very ordinary.

A day in the park

Imagine you are coming back from a park, where you spent a good day. You felt relaxed, part of all the bustle around you, open and clear. If you could keep that feeling of unity forever, everything would be so different.

But you get home and cannot find your keys. You search your pockets, your bag, and the anxiety begins. The unity quickly fades. At last you find them and go in. On the dining room table there is a letter-size envelope that came in the mail; you open it and read, in red ink: final notice.

Now you are worried, restless and in a bad mood. You feel a stifling heat in your face. They are charging you for something you already paid for, and your sense of being an individual is reduced to the contents of a letter.

The hours pass slowly, like the cars of a freight train. When your partner comes home, you already know, without being a fortune-teller, that everything that happened is going to come down on you, and the unease, the friction and the discomfort grow even sharper. Your heart closes even more, and you defend yourself as if your life were in danger. At that moment you have contracted the veil of separation to the utmost.

Which one is real?

Where did the unity go? Why is it so weak that it vanishes without a trace at the first setback?

Look at this calmly. You were aware of the feeling of unity in the park, just as you were aware of the contraction in front of that letter. Which one is real?

Both and neither.

Your Consciousness neither contracted nor expanded. Consciousness is your true nature. The two feelings were simply experienced in it; what changes is the value, the significance you give them, and that has to do only with the level of identification you have with your Being. Neither the unity nor the contraction has anything to do with your true Being, and your Being did not change in the slightest.

Your Being is neither the one nor the other. There was an observer, consciousness, that watched it all and judged neither one nor the other.

A veil that opens and closes

What opened in the park and closed in front of the letter was the feeling of separation. That feeling is not an emotion, even though it seems like one. It is only an idea that, depending on the circumstances around us, contracts or expands like a veil, and binds us more and more to the identity of the body.

We are co-creators, and we became so absorbed in our own creation that we lost ourselves, until we were convinced that there is a self and an other. But that separation is noticed by the Observer, Consciousness. The veil is not you: you are that which is aware of it.

A part of you that is eternal

When I ask you whether anything has changed since you were a child, I do not mean your physical life, or your personality, which has kept changing throughout your life. I am speaking of your essence: that eyewitness to everything, who is always there.

If you realize that this witness has not changed, you already know from your own experience what I am talking about. That part of your Being is eternal. No matter what happens or what you may experience, it is simply pure spirit, and it transcends all time and space. Life cannot grow old; it has no beginning, and it has no end either.

Discovering this opens your life to a whole world of possibilities, if you remain present in that simplicity. You begin to see your life unfold in front of you, magical and astonishing, before the eyes of a consciousness that never changes and that nothing can alter.

You already are

Because we feel separate, we carry out even our spiritual search outside ourselves. We begin a frantic search in the outer world, hoping for some achievement that will give meaning to life, without realizing that the more ideas we form about the truth, the more distant it becomes.

You do not need to create paths in the hope of advancing and progressing toward experiences, conquests or triumphs. You do not need to find the light, or another version of yourself. If the Divine Presence is what you are, what is it that you have to look for? You already are.

In every instant in which you favor the now, dissolving your attention into your heart, the mind collapses and your true nature is revealed just as it is: perfect, limitless and absolute.

The next time you cannot find your keys, or another letter with red lettering arrives, your chest may close again. When that happens, remember that you were aware of the park and that you are aware of the letter, and stay for a moment with that which is aware of both. It is the same one who looked at the world through your eyes when you were ten. It has always been there.
