Who is the one looking?

Illumination · Branch III · The one who observes

“If the answer comes to you with a doubt, it is the mind that generates it, not you; the Observer of that doubt is what you really are.”From El refugio del corazón

Right now, while you are reading these lines, someone is reading. The words pass before your eyes. So do thoughts and feelings, which come and go. But behind your eyes there is an observer who is aware of all of this, just as there is behind the eyes of any person or animal.

I leave you with a very simple question, and I ask you not to answer it with your mind: who is that observer?

If you cannot find the answer, do not feel frustrated. Just by coming to understand these words in this instant, you are already drawing aside one more veil that leads you toward yourself.

A witness that is never disturbed

The witness is a non-participant observer. It is aware of having a body that moves and shifts, of how thoughts and feelings arise, but it is never disturbed, regardless of the experience you are going through. It is always there, simply existing.

I Am. I exist.

By identifying with the mind, we have created a false idea of who we are, and the mind keeps searching, believing that it is someone. But the one who gives that mind its personality is you, your true Being. Discovering this is not a rational act; that is why it has always gone unnoticed by the mind.

And do not believe you will be a witness from your body's perspective: the Observer is Consciousness. Establishing a connection with it means realizing that the Observer will always be there.

Behind the veil

It is precisely this witness of whom you should be permanently aware. It is one of the most important observations if what you are looking for is spiritual growth, because it keeps you from falling into the claws of routine, of false gurus and even of rationality itself.

The ego has a hard time accepting that the truth is natural to it. As the mind is unable to process this revelation, it searches for it desperately everywhere, and so some become addicted to other people's experiences and mix up people and objects with real spirituality. Many have let themselves be carried away by the idea that they must search for their Being, without yet understanding that we ourselves are the Being. So, if you are your Being, what are you looking for?

There are no pilgrimages, milestones or masters with a spirituality of their own, because the spirit is the divine presence of the I Am. It is not something external: it is eternal and perfect, and both eternity and perfection are natural in us. It is the mind that lacks the capacity to understand it.

Once you internalize this observation, the veil that hid something very simple is lifted: the superficial is not permanent. And what truly remains is revealed: the witness, the Being, our Consciousness. That witness is actually God's presence. He Himself makes you live.

God lives in me

In my case, there came a moment when I understood I knew nothing, and I simply let myself fall into His grace, giving myself to everything life itself was leading me to. I realized that, regardless of where I was, that presence always remained. I understood God lives in me and that, wherever I moved, He would always be with me.

God is omnipresent: He inhabits all of us as the Being who has granted us life, and He is omniscient, as He knows it all. That is why, when you recognize the witness, a feeling of devotion, connection and relationship with the Father-Mother is likely to arise from the depths of your soul.

The good and the bad

When things happen in daily life that unsettle, disturb or upset us, it is advisable to remain present as the observer and protagonist of the experience, without being carried away by it or identifying with it mechanically. Before, during and after the experience, we are still the same.

Look at your own life. That silent observer that is always there: has its way of perceiving the world through the senses changed? Has it been altered by bad times, by good times, by periods of health or of illness?

When you tune in to this truth, which is you yourself and which flows from the depths of your heart, inner harmony and peace come to you like a balm that heals you of your wild emotional or mental upheavals. No friction arises, because you are flowing from your Being.

Since consciousness is absolute, you cannot take it anywhere; only the direction of your attention changes. When you stub your little toe, your whole body limps, because your attention is on the pain, and you have to bring love and care to that hurt toe. That is exactly what your Being does: it brings love to whatever is in pain. Your Being will always want to heal that finite part of you, bringing light to whatever is in darkness.

Remembering it in the middle of the day

There are very simple ways to return to the witness. You can call on it with simple phrases that are born in the heart, saying them with presence:

I am he who is aware of everything.

I am the setting where everything occurs.

Each time you integrate a new perception, your life changes. Everything happens here, living in the now, staying faithful to what you have understood.

Do not forget that nothing is outside you or different from you. When the transcendence of the Being takes place, you will still be you, but at a level of clarity. Return to the witness as often as you can in the middle of your day: it is always there, simply existing.
